Canterbury and District Model Engineering Society was formed in 1972 to provide for the interests of local model engineers. We have around 50 members who come from all walks of life. Whilst a few are professional engineers, most are amatuers who work at home in their spare time to produce miniature locomotives, traction engines, stationary steam engines and the like.

Not all of the models run on steam. Some members have built models of modern electric trains; others are interested in clocks, hot-air engines, farmyard machinery, artillery pieces, internal combustion engines, gas turbines, and so on. The list is endless and so, it seems is the ingenuity and skill of our members in producing these miniature works of art.

People who build models do so for a variety of reasons. Some may delight in making an accurate replica for their own enjoyment, others may just enjoy the process of using machinery and hand tools involved in the process of manufacture. If the model is a working replica many constructors gain much pleasure and satisfaction from seeing it perform just like its full size original.

For the newcomer, the choice of model, scale and how to set about it are important decisions.

The first step is to join a Model Engineering Society !
